More than 250 coxswains from all over the Mid Atlantic region attended an all-day coxing education event in Northern Virginia last weekend.
Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association and the Foundation for Rowing Education partnered to host the 2nd Annual Ted Phoenix Coxswain Clinic. The all day event drew coxswains from as far north as Philadelphia and New Jersey and as far south as Richmond, VA. Pete Cipollone and Joe Manion of the US national team and Laura Simon and Vanessa Chipman Flory presented on practice strategy, race day, voice, equipment, steering, and communication.

Walking down the halls during presentations, one could hear bursts of enthusiasm as novice and experienced coxswains alike practiced their commands and delivery. "I have their two seat!"
"Check it down. NOW" resounded through the building.
The workshops educated the coxswains on safety and weather, peer pressure, Rules, protests, steering, and how to communicate on the water. Frank Biller of NK demonstrated the electronics available to the Coxswain, from the basics of the Cox Box to the sophisticated speed monitoring devices for the experienced coxswain.
Ray Duff and Paul Phillips of the USRowing Referee commission presented Rules of Rowing and what the referee demands on race day. John White, also a USRowing Referee, presented the guidelines of safety.

Given the positive feedback we received from coxswains, coaches and parents alike, FRE and VASRA will, with NK, present the workshops twice yearly going forward, in the Fall for the more experienced coxswain and every spring for novices.
All three organizations believe that education of the coxswain leads to safer waterways. "I wish my daughter had attended workshops like this two years ago, when she started coxing," claimed one local parent, "Then I wouldn't have worried so much." |
