Fred, did you ever figure this out? I have a similar problem and have left a few messages for support. I'm hoping this is something that I can fix myself (with some kind of hard reset?), rather than send it back for service. Thanks.

Thanks for your question about the SpeedCoach XL2. It depends on the age of the SpeedCoach XL, if you cannot correct the problem on your own you may need to send it in for a firmware upgrade. What happened with your unit is that the battery lost it's charge, and when you tried to charge it back up the unit's battery status is confused and stuck at 1%. Your SpeedCoach’s battery is still charging, but the battery status is the problem.

Here is what you should do:

1) Do a Full System Reset (under System Settings, make sure to save your calibration number)
2) Charge the unit until it turns itself off
3) Take the unit off the charger
4) Put the unit back on the charger for 30 minutes
5) If the unit turns off, take the unit off and turn it back on

At this point you should see the battery status back to normal. If it is still stuck at 1% you will need to send it to us for a firmware upgrade. To do so please visit the Product Returns page on our website.

I'm stuck in a "Catch 22". My battery on my SpeedCoach XL2 is drained. I've had it on the charger overnight several times, but the Unit still reports that the battery is only at 1% charge. The owner's manual advises to reset the system before recharging. However, I can't do this because as soon as I power on to reset the system, the unit powers off, due to low battery. Is there a manual reset button on the unit?

I am answering my own post. The solution is outlined under another topic "SpeedCoach XL won't power on." I am quoting that post below for convenience:

"On SpeedCoach XL's with code version 1.11, it is possible for a unit to not power up, no matter how long it's been charged. This can happen when the battery runs completely down or if it's been stored unused for so long that the battery will go completely dead. (This is because the unit has lost its battery charge memory and it "thinks" it has a dead battery.)

At this point, it needs a full system reset. Since the unit won't power on, you are not able to do a full system reset through the Main Menu, so this button press sequence steps you through the process.

(Upgrading to Code version H1.12 or higher will prevent this from happening again.)

Warning, this is a little tricky to maneuver! You may want to read through the whole process before attempting.

1. Start with unit turned off.

2. Hold center left and center right buttons (hollow arrow and up arrow) AND at the same time press and hold the on/off button until a tiny question mark appears on screen.

3. Let go of on/off but keep holding center left and center right. While still holding center left and center right, press bottom left (solid arrow) until you see "reset in progress", then let everything go.

4. After the reset, the unit will come on with a normal screen and an estimated battery capacity. Once the battery is fully recharged, the battery capacity will be accurate.

NOTE: After a full system reset, you will need to re-enter any settings you have on your XL - i.e. calibration number, clock, group name, etc.

Contact NK to arrange an upgrade to the latest code version.

I am having the same problem with an XL2 I purchased this spring, running H1.16. It is stuck on 1%. I tried the below button holding tricks to reset it, however instead of the unit coming on with a normal screen and estimated battery capacity, I get a screen that reads:

"FUEL ERROR
Vpack out of
Bounds"

I can't find anything on these boards that talks about the Vpack, nor do I know what it is. I'd just like to charge my speedcoach and get it back in my boat! Any help is appreciated.

I have had it on the charger overnight. I also put the charger on a different outlet and left it charging all day at work today, still read 1% when I got home (over 13 hours later)

Thanks!
