NK is a small Pennsylvania company that designs,
manufactures, markets and distributes waterproof electronics for
active lifestyles and technical applications. Since 1978, NK has
been the primary manufacturer for performance monitoring devices
for rowing, canoeing and kayaking. In 1996, NK expanded its product
line to include hand-held wind and weather monitoring devices.
We currently have several new products under development.
Mechanical Engineer - Level II/III
Nielsen-Kellerman is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to participate in the design and development of our rugged outdoor electronic instruments. NK is an established and growing 30-year manufacturer of electronics for rowing and paddling and Kestrel brand weather instruments. Our strong worldwide reputation is built upon accuracy, durability, intuitive operation and knowing and meeting our customers’ needs. We manage every aspect of our business according to Lean principles and conduct all of our design, development, manufacturing, sales and support activities in one operation in southeastern Pennsylvania. Our engineers work as part of close-knit teams that include co-workers from sales, technical support and production. We focus on getting products to market, not departmental barriers.
This position will require a strong background in the design of injection-molded electronics housings and machined components, as well as an ability to apply creative thinking to balance considerations of durability, sealing, user interface, sensor operation, appearance, weight, cost and speed to market. Direct experience with making products that incorporate measurement sensors or are designed to be waterproof and durable will be very beneficial. ProE Wildfire expertise is required.
Specific responsibilities will include the following mechanical design activities with respect to new and existing NK products:
- Participating in teams to develop design concepts to meet customer needs
- Identifying and documenting design requirements (strength, tolerances, sealing, endurance, weight, buoyancy, etc.) appropriate to the product's use and operation
- Sketching and industrial design
- Researching, testing and proving new design elements
- ProE design of all custom mechanical parts, including injection molded and machined components
- Selection and testing of stock mechanical components
- Specification of materials for molding and machining
- Leading team design reviews
- Tracking and resolving design questions and issues
- Developing, maintaining and following schedules for mechanical design projects (in Excel or other chosen tool - we do not require or recommend Project)
- Preparation and documentation of drawing packages
- Support of custom part vendors (molders and machining suppliers)
- Assembling and testing prototype parts
- Specifying and documenting finished product test requirements with respect to mechanical performance
- Working closely with process engineers to develop manufacturing processes, jigs, fixtures and test equipment
- Supporting manufacturing personnel in resolving assembly and yield issues
- Modifying and maintaining designs to improve manufacturability or performance
- Maintaining models and drawings in response to ECO's
Qualifications sought:
- BSME, MSME or equivalent
- 5+ years experience designing parts for injection molding and machining, preferably rugged small-scale consumer-priced electronics products
- Knowledge of materials properties, thermoplastic resins, adhesives and ultrasonic welding
- Knowledge of prototyping and testing, including the ability to create 3-D models and prototypes to test concepts
- Demonstrated commitment to self-education to maintain current knowledge of design best practices, tools, materials and technical developments

- Experience in designing for Lean Manufacturing

NK's facility (manufacturing plant and offices) is located in Boothwyn, PA, 30 minutes south-west of Philadelphia. This position is full-time with a starting salary of $65,000. Work hours may be flexibly scheduled once individual responsibility is demonstrated, but our team-based approach does not accommodate telecommuting in this position.
